The feud between French and Brazilian presidents Emmanuel Macron and Jair Bolsonaro has reached some alarming levels, as the two seem to have started exchanging personal insults.
Recently, Bolsonaro made some unflattering comments regarding French first lady Brigitte Macron, and it did not take long for Macron to fire back, exclaiming that Bolsonaro was very rude.
This week, Bolsonaro expressed his support for a Facebook post regarding Brigitte that many have described as “sexist.”
The post in question made fun of the appearance of Macron’s wife, comparing her to Bolsonaro’s wife, Michelle.
The tagline of the photo implied that the differences between the two was the main reason for Macron to be attacking the Brazilian president over the fires destroying the Amazon forest.
A Bolsonaro supporter posted a Facebook message that compared 66-year-old Brigitte Macron’s appearance to Brazil’s first lady Michelle, 37.
The person wrote: “Now do you understand why Macron is persecuting Bolsonaro?” Bolsonaro replied by: “Do not humiliate the guy, ha ha.”
Many have condemned his actions, pointing out that he should not resort to such low blows if he has nothing of value to add to the discussion.

However, many have refused to be blinded by these attempts, and have continued to point out that the core issue the world is facing right now with regards to Brazil’s president are his lack of actions in the Amazon.
This was also the main reason for Macron to attack him in the first place, leading to many mocking the claims that his attacks were unprovoked.

So far, Macron has refused to stoop to Bolsonaro’s level and has not returned his insults.
The Frenchman said: “It’s sad, but it’s sad most of all for him and the Brazilians. I think Brazilian women will probably be ashamed to read that from their president.”

He added: “I think that Brazilians, who are great people, will probably be ashamed to see this behavior. As I feel friendship and respect towards the Brazilian people, I hope that they will soon have a president who behaves properly.”
At the same time, many of his followers have taken matters into their own hands, and have been actively attacking the Brazilian president online and some have apologized via the hashtag #DesculpaBrigitte (Sorry, Brigitte.)

One person replied: “Sorry about our president, he’s an idiot. #DesculpaBrigitte.”
Another commenter stated: “@EmanuelMacron this stupid president doesn’t represent all Brazilian people. We are very shamed! #DesculpaBrigitte”
This Brazilian said: “Forgive us Lady Macron, first I don’t speak French (I would love to), second I didn’t vote to him, and I’m crying for everything. You’re an amazing woman, and your husband is a marvelous man. 😭💔#DesculpaBrigitte.”
