Robert Rodríguez is an American director, writer, cinematographer, producer, editor, musician, composer, visual effects supervisor, actor, and cartoonist. He has directed the films El Mariachi, Desperado, Spy Kids, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Grindhouse (Planet Terror segment), Shorts, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, and We Can Be Heroes, all of which he also wrote; The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, Machete, Red 11, and Hypnotic, all of which he also co-wrote, Red 11 with his son Racer Rodríguez; and From Dusk till Dawn, The Faculty, Frank Miller’s Sin City, Machete Kills, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and Alita: Battle Angel. He also directed and co-wrote the made-for-tv movie Roadracers, directed episodes of the shows From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, which he also developed, The Director’s Chair, which he also created and hosted, Matador, and The Book of Boba Fett; and directed the concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles.

Robert is the son of Rebecca (Villegas), a nurse, and Cecilio G. Rodríguez, a salesperson. Robert has five children, including also actor Rebel Rodríguez, with his former wife, Venezuelan-born producer Elizabeth Avellán, who worked on his films. Robert is a cousin, to some degree, of actor Danny Trejo.

Robert’s paternal grandfather was Valentin Rodríguez (the son of Cecilio Rodríguez and Paula Peña). Valentin was born in Texas. Paula was the daughter of Domingo Peña and Jesusa Vasquez.

Robert’s paternal grandmother was Severina Garza (the daughter of Teodoro Garza and María Antonia Parra). Severina was born in Texas. Teodoro was the son of Placido Garza and Juana Martínez.

Robert’s maternal grandfather was Bernardo Villegas (the son of Antonio Villegas and María Antonia Molinar). Bernardo was born in Texas. Antonio was the son of José Guadalupe Villegas and Alvina Lozano. Maria Antonia was the daughter of Luis Molinar and Ramona Dominguez.

Robert’s maternal grandmother was Consuelo Olivares (the daughter of Manuel Olivares Arnillo and Consuelo Aguirre). Robert’s grandmother Consuelo was born in Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal, México, to parents from Jalisco. Robert’s great-grandmother Consuelo was the daughter of Jesús Aguirre del Fierro and María del Refugio.
